Mike Jobe's Story

Oct 28, 2014

What were the steps leading up to your diagnosis?

I actually figured it out from my daughter’s friend who had just been diagnosed. My vision was awful, but I deferred that to having glasses that were an old prescription. I kept drinking water, coffee etc., but at all times my thirst was awful, and I urinated over and over. I overheard her talking and BAM it hit me – ‘That's me!’ The bad thing is your system is getting damaged without you even knowing it!

I don’t totally understand type one or two, but I am insulin dependent. The name I hear most is ‘juvenile type’.

Who has been there for you? How?

Family and friends always. Every day you wake up is a good day.

What lifestyle changes have you needed to make?

My weight was 175lbs. It’s been eight plus years now and I am at 155lbs and still spiraling – as my doc says ‘crash and burn’. I’m almost 50 now and the beast is winning the battle!

What accomplishment are you proud of?

My family and my 24 years with my employer.

What's your advice to someone else living with Type 2 Diabetes?

Be careful – the night times can cost you more than you realize. Low sugar while asleep can turn into a diabetic coma you may never awake from. I rise before my wife each morning and if I sleep in she is scared to touch me, not knowing if I am okay. It’s an awful ride for all involved

Every day you wake up is a good day.

Is there anything else we should know?

People think that diabetes is caused by being overweight only, but it’s not so. It’s so hard for a child with this condition. My prayer is that soon they will have an option for babies. One other thing I didn't know is that diabetics can give blood. I did as soon as my son was told at a local drive – I wish that would be publicized better.
